“Perfect Nanny”: a monster in your nursery

Let’s be honest: sooner or later, many mothers begin to dream about this. About the fact that a nanny will suddenly appear who will release them from captivity at home into the big world – where you can become a professional again and talk about something other than diapers and early development methods. A nanny who will take on some of the care of the children – dearly loved, who argues, but try to sit with them 24/7. The one who loves them. Perhaps even too much. About this “The Ideal Nanny”, which will be available in cinemas from January 30.

Paul and Miriam have the perfect life. Or close to ideal: an apartment in Paris, two wonderful children – 5 years and 11 months old, Paul has a favorite job, Miriam has … too much household chores to even think about something else. And it drives you crazy – the crying of a baby who is teething, a social circle limited by the boundaries of the sandbox, the inability to realize some other function besides the mother’s …

So in their life appears she, Louise, the ideal nanny. The best Mary Poppins can not be desired: extremely punctual, collected, polite, moderately strict, frank, old-fashioned, excellent at getting along with children, the Frenchwoman Louise quickly puts family affairs in order and becomes indispensable. It seems that she can do everything: clean up a neglected apartment, create culinary masterpieces, get close to her wards, not letting them sit on her neck, entertain a crowd of children at a holiday. It seems that this “hired mother” is simply incredibly good – and at this point, parents would have to strain, but no.

Дадиља сваким даном добровољно преузима све више обавеза, долази раније код послодаваца, ослобађа им све више времена за себе и за себе. Све више воли децу. Чак јаче. Превише.

Intoxicated by the sudden freedom (parties with friends – please, new work projects – no problem, romantic evenings together – how long they dreamed about it), Paul and Miriam do not immediately pay attention to warning signs. Well, yes, the nanny unnecessarily strongly disapproves of the translation of products. He reacts sharply to any attempts to remove her from the children – including giving her a well-deserved day off. He sees in his grandmother – an infrequent, but adored by children guest in the house – a rival who violates all the rules established by her, Louise.

But the really frightening signals: aggression towards other children on the playground, strange educational measures, bites on the body of the baby – for the time being go unnoticed by the parents (who, however, gradually begin to feel like strangers in their own home). Parents – but not a spectator: from watching how the “ideal” nanny, like a tightrope walker, balances on a thin line over the abyss of madness, it takes her breath away.

Actually, with this – the feeling of lack of air in the lungs – and you remain in the final. And with the agonizing question “why?”. In the film, there is no answer to it, as, indeed, in the novel, for which Leila Slimani received the Prix Goncourt in 2016. This is because life rarely gives answers to our questions, and The Ideal Nanny – and this is perhaps the scariest thing – is based on real events.
