The fruiting body of the stepchild cobwebs consists of a stem and a cap. The diameter of the cap is 5-7 cm. Its shape in immature mushrooms is bell-shaped and convex, while in mature fruiting bodies it becomes broadly bell-shaped, almost flat or, conversely, convex. The surface of the cap is dry, silky to the touch. The color varies from copper-orange to orange-brown.
The hymenophore is represented by plates that adhere to the stem. In young specimens, it has a brown color, then it becomes rusty brown, and white edges and small notches are clearly visible on the plates. In young mushrooms, the plates are covered with a white coating.
The length of the leg is 5-6 cm, the thickness in the upper part is no more than 1,5 cm. The leg is thicker near the base, club-shaped, silky and dry to the touch. In color – white with a brownish tinge. Unripe specimens have a stem with a bluish-purple tint.
The basal mycelium is white in color, the annular zones on the stem are often difficult to identify.
White flesh (may be pale brown at the base of the stem), spongy. Spore powder is rusty-brown in color.

Found in eastern North America. Sometimes it can also grow in deciduous forests, under birch trees.
