Create your children’s costumes

Mardi Gras is just around the corner! Don’t have time to buy a costume for your child? Opt for recuperation. Discover the tips of designers Nathalie Prenot and Annabel Benilan to create, in no time at all, a great costume at a low price.

Making a princess dress and mittens

The favorite costume of little girls is obviously the princess dress. For the top, you just need to grab a white t-shirt or a small shirt. Cut off the sleeves. Using a needle and thread, add bias on the edges. You can also add a piece of fabric cut in the shape of a triangle all the way up. Otherwise, for an even more fancy effect, make the triangle with two strips of fabric and sew them at the shoulders and navel. Then make the bottom of the dress with one of your old petticoats. Adjust the waist at the waist by slitting the fabric and the elastic. Cover with a fancy petticoat, felt or glitter fabric. Remember to match the colors. To cinch the waist, use a wide ribbon. If you have any left over, make small knots and sew them to the bottom of the dress.

If your princess wants mittens, nothing could be simpler. Use old wool or satin tights, cut the top and the feet, and voila.

A cardboard disguise that is a hit

You certainly remember the Queen of Hearts, the star character of the cartoon “Alice in Wonderland”. To reproduce this disguise, you just have to collect two large pieces of cardboard. Then paint them white. Once dry, draw the symbols of your choice in red or black (hearts, spikes, clovers). Finally, make two holes on each cardboard at the level of the shoulders and pass a pretty ribbon to bind them.

Create pirate pants

Is your son a Jack Sparrow fan? Create him pirate pants using old black or brown pants and cut the bottom. Guaranteed effect thanks to the hanging threads. To tighten the waist, use a large dark colored ribbon, then tie a knot.

Zorro’s mask and cloak

An essential accessory for superheroes, the cape is not complicated to make: vYou only need a large rectangle of fabric, then adjust it to your child’s height. Gather the top to get the neckline and add a ribbon. For the mask, you just need to take a satin black fabric and make holes for the eyes. Child’s play !

The kitchen is full of treasures

To disguise your children, dig into your kitchen. The silvery scratching sponges can, once broken down, form robot antennae-like springs. Success guaranteed! For an offbeat costume, large trash bags will also do the trick. You just have to make a hole for the head in the bottom and two on the side for the arms. However, to avoid any risk of suffocation, this type of costume is not suitable for children under 3 years old.
