As the causes of irritable bowel syndrome are poorly understood, the risk factors are impossible to pinpoint at this time.

An American study of 399 nurses found that the risk of suffering from this syndrome is higher in those with rotating schedules (days and nights) than among those working only day or night³⁶. There did not appear to be any association between abdominal pain and the participants’ sleep quality. The researchers speculate that the disruption of wake-sleep cycles could be a risk factor. For now, this is a guess.
